Onder de zee bij het Indonesische eiland Sumatra heeft zich zaterdagmiddag – zes dagen na de verwoestende zeebeving en vloedgolven van tweede kerstdag – een beving met een kracht van 7 op de schaal van Richter voorgedaan. Dat meldde het Chinese staatsbureau voor seismologie.
Het was de zwaarste naschok van de zeebeving van 26 december tot nu toe. Deskundigen verwachtten niet dat de beving schade zou veroorzaken aan land.

Op de website van het Amerikaanse seismologische instituut worden veel naschokken geregistreerd. De beving van 7.0 op de schaal van Richter staat hiet echter niet bij. Zie ook dit overzicht van recente bevingen.

Pounding rain drenched the wrecked city of Banda Aceh on Saturday, adding to the misery of homeless earthquake and tsunami survivors and heightening fears of waterborne diseases. Flash floods in Sri Lanka forced evacuations and thwarted aid deliveries.
Worldwide donations to aid those battered by the huge waves that slammed Asian and African nations approached $1 billion, and a steady stream of foreign military aircraft touched down in the epicenter of the disaster, the Aceh province on the northern tip of Indonesia’s Sumatra island.
But supplies were bottlenecking and officials acknowledged distribution networks were not in place to deliver desperately needed supplies to the worst-hit areas.
“The scale of the disaster is just too big,” said Andi Mallarengen, spokesman for Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. “We can bring in the aid, food, but we need manpower to distribute them.”

The United Nation’s emergency relief operations coordinator said the death toll is approaching this figure and Sweden’s foreign minister said it could go as high as 200,000.

When the first wave came in, we were happy that we were seeing something that was really strange, but it was a very mild wave. Then the sea receded back, and we didn’t know what that meant.
It was like someone had pulled the plug on the ocean, and crags and outcroppings of rock inside the sea were visible for the first time in years.
We just watched it, and I was taking photographs of it. Then came this massive wall of water. What did I do? I just sat and watched it. I just watched it and watched it as it came in – it took maybe four seconds from the point when I was aware of it to the point when it hit the hotel.

Het aantal vermisten in Sri Lanka als gevolg van de onderzeese aardbeving in de Indische Oceaan is verhoogd naar 14.000.
Dat heeft de regering van Sri Lanka bekendgemaakt. Het dodental kan daardoor oplopen tot boven de 42.000. Dat is nu 28.475. Het aantal vermisten stond op 5000 en is dus met 9000 toegenomen.

Een Brits meisje heeft volgens de boulevardkrant The Sun honderden badgasten op een strand in het Thaise Phuket gered. “Mama, we moeten van het strand af, nu!“, riep de 10-jarig Tilly vorige week toen ze de aarde voelde beven. Ze had net op school geleerd dat aardbevingen tsunami’s kunnen veroorzaken.
“Ik was op het strand en het water begon raar te doen“, vertelt Tilly. Ze sloeg direct alarm. Ze had geleerd dat een vloedgolf nog tien minuten op zoch laat wachten als het water zich terugtrekt van het strand. Die tijd was precies genoeg om het Maikhao-strand en een nabijgelegen hotel te ontruimen. Niemand raakte aldaar dan ook ernstig gewond.

Lonely Planet has committed AUS$500,000 (approximately US$400,000) to the disaster relief effort. Of that money, AUS$225,000 will be donated immediately to the Red Cross, Care, Oxfam, Save the Children and Foundation for the People of Burma. The remainder will be donated to specific community initiatives over the next six months. In addition, Lonely Planet is offering each of its employees a day away from the office to volunteer in the relief effort, and is facilitating employee contributions.
