The death toll in the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster has soared above 120,000 as millions scramble for food and fresh water and thousands more flee in panic to high ground on rumours of new waves.
Aid agencies warned on Thursday that many more, from Indonesia to Sri Lanka, could die in epidemics if shattered communications and transport hampered what may prove history’s biggest relief operation.
Rescue workers pressed on into isolated villages shattered by a disaster that could yet eclipse a cyclone that struck Bangladesh in 1991, killing 138,000 people.
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi called for an emergency meeting of the Group of Eight so that the rich nations club could discuss aid and possible debt reduction following “the worst cataclysm of the modern era”.
The total toll had shot up more than 50 percent in a day with still no clear picture of conditions in some isolated islands and villages around India and Indonesia.

NOODHULP. Mensen die in onzekerheid verkeren over het lot van geliefden na de zeebeving in Azi?, kunnen terecht op een speciale website. Via de website familylinks.icrc.org van het internationale Rode Kruis kunnen mensen hun familieleden registreren en opsporen. Ook met satelliettelefoons en door posters aan te plakken brengt het Rode Kruis familie weer met elkaar in contact.

On Wednesday morning Mr. Bush, operating from a trailer just across the road from his ranch that has been converted into a secure communications center, called the leaders of Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and India to pledge his support.
“I assured those leaders this is only the beginning of our help,” he said of the $35 million that the administration has pledged so far.
Mr. Bush’s aides are aware that the depth of America’s compassion will be compared to what other nations are spending, what Washington spends on lesser disasters at home, and what is now being spent in Iraq.
Spain has publicly committed about $68 million. Australia has pledged $27 million. American officials say those comparisons can be misleading because the United States is providing airlift and other services in an aid coalition with Japan, India and Australia.
Then there are the domestic comparisons. Congress has approved roughly $13 billion for aid related to the hurricanes that hit the country in the late summer. Most of that is going to Florida, where Mr. Bush loaded fresh water and dry goods into the trunks of cars.
Of course, that was home turf, and an election campaign was under way, and even Mr. Bush’s critics do not expect spending on that scale for the far greater disaster in South Asia.
And there are already signs that Democrats want to link the response to this disaster to spending in Iraq. “I just about went through the roof when I heard them bragging about $35 million,” Senator Patrick J. Leahy, the Vermont Democrat and a persistent critic of how the American rebuilding operation has gone in Iraq. “We spend $35 million before breakfast in Iraq.”
Speaking by telephone from his home in Vermont, Mr. Leahy, who is the ranking Democrat on the foreign operations subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee, urged that a portion of the largely unspent $18 billion for Iraq reconstruction be re-directed for Asian relief efforts.

More than 125,000 people have now been confirmed dead across south Asia following Sunday’s tidal wave disaster.
Twenty eight of the dead are known to be Britons. The World Health Organisation has warned that an outbreak of disease could double the death toll. More than 79,000 people have been declared dead in Indonesia alone – the worst-hit country. Sri Lanka says nearly 29,000 people have been killed there. Thailand says the number of dead is 4,500, of which at least 2,230 are foreigners who have died in the southern Thai province on beaches including Khao Lak.
An estimated five million people need aid across the southern Asia region.

Rob Delissen had no idea whether his brother Theo, his wife and their two-year-old daughter were still alive after the tsunami hit Thailand. The Dutchman was one among thousands of people trying to trace family and friends after a disaster which claimed tens of thousands of lives.
Shattered communications only added to the difficulty of getting news. But a posting by a stranger on the BBC News website led Mr Delissen to his relatives, who had all survived.

A rapid surge in donations worldwide brought to over 450 million dollars the funds raised or pledged for emergency relief in Asian countries swept by tidal waves that killed at least 118,000 people.
The government of Britain led the field with a pledge of 96 million dollars, followed by those of Sweden, the Netherlands and France which offered tens of millions of dollars more than they had previously amid charges that wealthy countries were “stingy.”
The government funds would reach disaster victims in Asia through various channels including humanitarian groups like the International Committee of the Red Cross as well as UN and other international institutions.
Private donations meanwhile were particularly high, even “phenomenal” in Britain and Italy, which amounted to a total of 53 million dollars.
British charities under the umbrella of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) said their appeals had netted 20 million pounds in aid in 48 hours.
Queen Elizabeth II has also contributed a “substantial” but undisclosed sum, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said.
The published British figures were equivalent to around 134 million dollars.

Het totale geldbedrag dat Nederlanders hebben gestort op giro 555, is donderdag opgelopen tot 9,3 miljoen euro. De rekening is zondagavond door de Samenwerkende Hulporganisaties (SHO) opengesteld voor hulp aan de slachtoffers van de zeebeving in Azi?. Volgens een woordvoerster is het “gigantische” bedrag de stand tot en met donderdagochtend. Daarbij komt nog de 5 miljoen euro die minister Van Ardenne voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking heeft toegezegd.

Survivors of what is believed to be the world’s worst rail accident have been telling the BBC News website of their experiences.
The Queen of the Sea was nearing its destination when the waves knocked it sideways.
Up to 1,500 people were crammed inside the train as it travelled 75 miles (110km) along the Sri Lankan coastline from Colombo to the southern city of Galle.
At least 802 died and hundreds remain unaccounted for.
The force of the wave threw the train’s eight cars into a bog and left the coastal railroad a twisted mess of metal.

Vier Britse toeristen die op Sri Lanka gewond raakten door de tsunami die onder andere dit eiland trof, zijn gered dankzij hun mobiele telefoons. De Srilankaanse telefoonmaatschappijen kwamen op het lumineuze idee om vermiste buitenlanders in hun land op te sporen door na te gaan welke mobiele telefoons er binnen het bereik van hun netwerk bevonden. Dit is ook meetbaar indien men wel het gsm-toestel ingeschakeld heeft, maar niet aan het bellen is.
Uit metingen bleek dat er ruim 10.000 vreemdelingen met een mobiele telefoon op het eiland te zaten op het moment dat de rampzalige vloedgolf de kust overspoelde. De telefoonmaatschappijen stuurden daarop een sms-bericht naar al deze toestellen, met de vraag of alles in orde was. Op dit sms-bericht kwamen bijna 4300 reacties terug. Onder hen zat een groep van 35 toeristen uit Hong Kong en een van 36 Britten, die op moeilijk bereikbare plaatsen waren gestrand en niet meer verder konden.

De radiostations Noordzee FM, Radio 10 Gold, Sky Radio, Radio Veronica, Classic FM, Yorin FM, RTL FM, Arrow Rock Radio, Arrow 90.7 FM, Juize.FM en Radio 538 doen mee aan de gezamenlijke actie. Via de websites van de radiostations kunnen mensen ook een extra bedrag storten op het gironummer.
Ook de publieke zender Radio 3FM houdt een soortgelijke sms-actie. Luisteraars kunnen GEEF sms’en naar 3111 om daarmee 1,50 euro voor Azi? te doneren.
